- Otto Von BismarckI was developing a World War I documentary project, when I came across diaries from soldiers from the trenches of 1916 and it became clear that War today has not changed for the soldier. Reading the diaries made me understand that whether you support the notion of war, that we must understand what war does to the young men who have fought. November 11th has many names—Veterans, Armistice, Remembrance day—but for most people it has become a global holiday devoid of real context. [The Battle of] Somme attempts to depict both the insanity and scale of a single battle that was the greatest battle the world has ever known that in the end claimed well over 1 million dead. It is a collection of never-before-seen stereo images and film materials that bring context to this almost unimaginably large conflict as told in the words of those who fought and died over yards of earth in the first “modern” war. Somme will release for veterans day and 50% of the proceeds from the film are being donated to soldiers and their families in need of medical support services who like their compatriots of nearly a century ago have also too been forgotten.
