Super Tough!: Geek Tyrant's Top 5 Stan Lee Quotes

  1. "There is only one who is all powerful, and his greatest weapon is love." - Lee in Silver Surfer
  2. "I'm a frustrated actor. My ... goal is to beat Alfred Hitchcock in the number of cameos. I'm going to try to break his record." - Feb. 6, 2006
  3. "I never thought that Spider-Man would become the world wide icon that he is. I just hoped the books would sell and I'd keep my job." - Mar. 13, 2006
  4. "With great power there must also come ... great responsibility!" - Amazing Fantasy #15, Aug. 1962
  5. "I'm no prophet, but I'm guessing that comic books will always be strong. I don't think anything can really beat the pure fun and pleasure of holding a magazine in your hand, reading the story on paper, being able to roll it up and put it in your pocket, reread again later, show it to a friend, carry it with you, toss it on a shelf, collect them, have a lot of magazines lined up and read them again as a series. I think young people have always loved that. I think they always will."

Clip #2 from "The Woman"

Excerpt from the Geek Tyrant review:

The Woman left me speechless when I walked out of the theater after seeing it. What in the hell do you say about a movie as sadistically jacked up as this one? I thought I Saw the Devil was a pretty disturbing, demented, and violent film, but The Woman was far worse, and I honestly didn't think it could get any worse. The film was just a terrifyingly hard movie to watch, but I would gladly watch it again because it was so damned entertaining! There was a lot of uncomfortable laughter in the theater, laughter to cover up the uncomfortable feelings the audience had while watching the movie. At least that’s what it sounded like to me, and that’s why I was laughing. I couldn't believe what was happening in this film! It was absolutely terrifying.

This hardcore sadistic film has so many different layers to it and takes on some pretty heavy themes such as abuse, legacies, and the hardship of being an adolescent. There are several moments where the movie crosses the line, but that’s one of the reasons why it was so fascinating to watch. I’ve never seen a movie cross the line like this one did.

Plot:

Chris Cleek (Sean Bridgers, Deadwood) is a small town court officer living a quiet, seemingly normal life in the heart of Maine with his beloved family. That is, until Chris discovers a feral woman roaming the woods and makes it the family's project to civilise her. But as the family's methods of forcing civility upon the woman become ever more extreme, the perverse bonds uniting them will be cast into violent relief.

Trailer for "Martha Marcy May Marlene"

Plot:
MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE stars Elizabeth Olsen as Martha, a damaged woman haunted by painful memories and increasing paranoia, who struggles to reassimilate with her family after fleeing a cult.

Excerpt from Geek Tyrant's Review:

Olsen deserves all the acclaim she's receiving for her performance here; she's superb, and she convincingly takes the audience on a journey of shattered memories and paranoia as we start to experience her recovery along with her. The editing of this movie was gimmicky - it cross cuts between Martha's present time living with her sister and her sister's husband, and flashbacks of her cult life - but the transitions between the two time periods are very well done. Normally I'dsee a technique like this as being a bit too contrived, but Durkin's writing and direction make the cross cuts feel like an organic progression.

Academy Award Nominee John Hawkes was phenomenal; like The Ledge's Patrick Wilson has a lock on the creepy suburban archetype, Hawkes has playing the backwoods patriarch down to a science. He also gets to show off a bit of his musical skill set, playing guitar and singing the disquieting "Marcy's Song" in the movie. He's alternatingly charismatic and horrifying, much like Michael Parks' cult leader figure in Kevin Smith's Red State. He gives the girls who come to his commune new names to separate them from their past, and builds their self-confidence by essentially brainwashing them into servitude (sexual and otherwise).

"Captain America" Sequel is Planned for 2014

Chris Evans stated in a recent interview:

“They may wait until 2014 until they release the next 'Cap'. Marvel has a lot of balls in the air. They aren’t going to cannibalize their films.

Out of those six films, if I pop up in one of those [other films], it counts as part of the deal. So if they needed me in a third 'Cap', and I say, ‘F--k you, give me $30 million,’ well, they want to avoid that.”

Geek Tyrant reports:

"Evans is contracted to appear in six films altogether, so that means there will likley be three Captain America films and three Avengers films"

The Gadgets: Geek Tyrant's 5 Stunning Revelations About Modern Gaming

1. Nintendo is not going anywhere...despite what everyone wants you to believe.

You doubt me bro? Go ahead and look up the top selling console in the US right now...how about Europe? That's right it's the Nintendo DS lookin all sexy with it's primitive looking graphics and no Xbox live...granted before that there was a brief stint for the 360, which was preceded by a two year reign by the Nintendo Wii.

Why does this matter?: When you're selling record setting consoles...it makes little to no sense whatsoever to leave the video gaming world and stay on as a developer like most "experts" predict...ignore the Doomsday Nintendo articles...they mean nothing.

2. You're Wii/PS3/Xbox360 will not last as long as your Sega Genesis/SNES.

I laugh (like a dolphin) when video game analyst talk about the lifespan in market terms for today's consoles when to date i've had...3 friends with broken PS3 harddrives...4 friends that are on their second Xbox 360...and my 1st gen Wii will no longer play discs unless it's slightly tilted to the side. On the other hand, I just recently played a first gen SNES for three hours red-ring free and without even having to blow in the cartridge! Unfortunately, CD drives are rough to maintain and are easily ruined...thus making their shelf life much less beastly than their great grandfathers...

Why does this matter?: The days of nostalgia in the future of gaming will have to live on primarily through digital downloads on newer consoles...which means you will have to rebuy all your beloved games as opposed to dusting off the old box in the closet...which sucks really.

3. DLC's cost wayyyyyyyyyyy too much money.

If you bought Halo Reach when it first came out...you paid at least $49.99 (depending on sales tax etc)...if you bought the two map packs you spent 800 Microsoft points (10 bucks) on each respectively. This bumps the price up to nearly $70 dollars for around 18 (generous number due to many levels being Forge edited) multiplayer maps. Let's not even get into WoW where if you are up to date on all your expansions you've paid at least a hundo already. How about Marvel vs. Capcom 3 developers who decided to preload all their DLC into the game coding then slowly charged for every new character released? It's is in it's highest form...extortion. It needs to stop.

Why does this matter?: DLC's are meant to enhance gaming and add new excitement and adventure to a game you love...but more often than not developers are now just putting less depth into games so they can hit you with another 10 dollar charge when the "Mountain Dew Game Fuel" bucket runneth dry. Remember the days when fighting games had over 50 characters and you didn't pay extra? Let's get back to that.

4. Gamefly and Onlive will become the Netflix of Video Gaming.

No I didn't get paid to say this...although it would be nice. Now that movie stores are going under, it only makes sense that gamers will have to go elsewhere when they rent video games. Gamefly works basically the same as Netflix in that you can use a mailing service to get games you wanna play, then send them back when you are done. Onlive is a bit of a wild card because it comes with it's own gaming system but allows you to stream new games from over the web and play them instantly.

Why does this matter?: Onlive is a big deal for one very intriguing reason. It allows you to play third party titles without using a first party system...which means you can play some of the biggest games of the year without having a Xbox, Nintendo, or Sony system...and that's something that I'm sure will become a hot button issue in the future.

5. You never found out what all those achievement points were for...

I wanna make a stand right now that there should be no Achievements on next gen software until someone gives me a damn reason why they should be. Oh, I just did seven flips in a row after equipping my fishing rod?! Awesome that was worth 100G...A HUNDRED G FOR WHAT?! IT MAKES ZERO SENSE AND THERE IS NO POINT! MAKE IT WORTH SOMETHING OR REMOVE IT.

Why does this matter?: EXACTLY! ARRRRGGGH!

Super Tough!: Geek Tyrant's 5 Ways Video Games Positively Impact the World

Here's the list:

Video games are changing the world in positive ways every day, and while the naysayers continue to push their propaganda every time some lonely idiot wants press time, you can stand on these facts to go toe to toe and defend your passion with pride!

1. Video Games Help Cure Cancer

Ever heard of a game called Foldit? Foldit is a free to download game that's not only fun and addictive, but also helps develop scientific research to move forward efforts towards curing HIV and Cancer. Even better? The top five players currently ranked don't have a science education past high school, so no you don't have to be one of them big thinkers to be good at it. Download the game, and whip it out next time haters give you lip...you save lives dammit.

2.Video Games Save Lives

Meet Paxton Galvanek: father, business owner, and gamer. In January 2008 mild mannered Galvanek witnessed an SUV flip and roll on a highway and sprang into action. He pulled the victims from the car, but noticed one of them was bleeding severely from where their fingers had been severed in the accident. Galvanek used a towel whilst raising the victims arm to slow the flow of blood and ultimately saved the mans life. Galvanek has no prior medical training, but he did complete the second section of the "Medic" training in Americas Army, and for that, we geeks salute him.

3. Video Games Make People Smarter

Renaissance pop quiz! For those of you that play games but haven't hit the books in a while, could you take a shot in the dark and tell me where the Renaissance began? How about the roles of the Medici and Borgia families? Heck you could probably even tell me that Rodrigo Borgia was Pope Alexander the VI! Why can you (or if you can't, cannot) do this? Obviously you've been playing a healthy amount of Assassins Creed. We learn about wars, famous people, and the Cuban Missile Crisis in nearly every Metal Gear Solid, and it's games like this that subliminally educate us in our every day lives. Furthermore research shows that gaming increase cognitive thinking, problem solving, and increases people's will to succeed! So suck on that book nerds!

4. Video Games Help Children With Learning Disabilities

So your kid is struggling in school, but somehow can manage to annihilate Final Fantasy XII in a weeks time during the Summer...not only that, but they can tell you the characters, what's happening, and all the back stories involved...so what's the deal? It could be their learning style. Research is showing now that kids with learning disabilities can actually increase their reading comprehension and general skills through playing story heavy video games...provided they don't hit the skip button on every cut scene (kids today...so spoiled).

5. Violence in Video Games Helps The Media Get Through A Slow News Day

Let's give credit where credit is due, major network news anchors work hard. They work a few hours out of their day, report stories they don't write, and strike fear into the hearts of millions over information they themselves don't know is true. It's a sad fact that television knows how to rope you in, and even if the source doesn't say it, they're going to twist it to make it sound like it does. Fast Fact, most Video Game violence propaganda comes from a field of study known as “Media Effects”. The field of media effects is shaky at best, but hey don't take it from me, lets have MIT professor Henry Jenkins tell it like it is to the fool who claims video games helped him take lives and the bigger fools who believe him...

"Most of those studies are inconclusive and many have been criticized on methodological grounds. In these studies, media images are removed from any narrative context. Subjects are asked to engage with content that they would not normally consume and may not understand. Finally, the laboratory context is radically different from the environments where games would normally be played. Most studies found a correlation, not a causal relationship, which means the research could simply show that aggressive people like aggressive entertainment. That's why the vague term "links" is used here. If there is a consensus emerging around this research, it is that violent video games may be one risk factor - when coupled with other more immediate, real-world influences — which can contribute to anti-social behavior. But no research has found that video games are a primary factor or that violent video game play could turn an otherwise normal person into a killer."

Comic-Con 2010 Day 4: The Avengers Cast Announced Courtesy of Geek Tyrant

During the Marvel Panel at Comic-Con the cast of all the main Avengers characters and actors were announced! It was announced earlier this week and Mark Ruffalo would replace Edward Norton as The Hulk and now it's officially official. It's also official that Jeremy Renner will be taking on the role of Hawkeye. I'm 100% on board with both of these casting decisions. Here's how it all went down.

After the Thor panel ended the lights went down and and an Avengers logo slowly resolved on screen as Sam Jackson did a voice over as Nick Fury explained the formation of the world’s most awesome superhero team. After it ended Jackson came on stage to introduce the cast of the highly anticipated movie.

He ended up bring out the familiar cast members such as Clark Gregg (SHIELD Agent Coulsen), Chris Evans (Captain America) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor). Then Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man) made surprise appearances. Well, I guess it wasn't really a surprise, we all kin of knew they would be there.

Downey Jr. took over the mic, and commented on the ambition of Christopher Nolan's Inception, then he proclaimed the idea of bringing together the leads of all of Marvel’s superhero films for The Avengers to be the most insanely ambitious movie production yet. It's hard to argue.

Downey Jr. then introduced Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, aka The Hulk.

There was definitely a mixed response from the audience regarding Ruffalo's casting. Only minutes before an audience member asked Marvel President Feige about the return of Edward Norton, and it was followed by boos that erupted from the audience when Feige pretty much downplayed the dismissal of Norton.

Joss Whedon then came out on stage with a huge smile on his face! He said “I’ve had a dream all my life, and it was not this good!” He then jokingly added, “and I am going to blow it.”

Comic-Con 2010 Day 3: Sucker Punch Panel Courtesy of Geek Tyrant

In case you somehow haven't heard, Snyder's Sucker Punch is a period piece set in the 1950's and centers around a young girl whose evil stepfather puts her in a mental institution to lobotomize her, so she retreats to a world in her own head in order to plan her escape. The film is coming out on March 25th, 2011.

I'm a relatively fast typer, so I was able to capture a large amount of the questions and answers and get them up for you guys so you can almost feel as if you were there with us. Geoff Boucher from the LA Times Hero Complex moderated the panel, and then opened the floor for Q&A's from the audience, so those are the sources of the questions.

Many of the female cast members joined Snyder on stage, including Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jena Malone, Carla Gugino, and Jamie Chung.

Zack, each of your other movies was an adaptation – this is your own script. Snyder - “I've been working on this for...Steve and I have been working on this thing for quite a while, 8 years, maybe longer. I'm a huge fan of fantasy and movies, and every time you work on a project you're like there's a cool story that I'd love to tell and that's what Sucker Punch has become...it's fun in this current climate of making movies to be able to make something that's completely original and not based on a breakfast cereal or super glue.”

[They show the trailer for the first time, and it's the first time the actresses on stage have ever seen any of the footage as well.]

Tell us your character and talk about the footage. Emily - “My reaction to the footage is I'm shaking like crazy. I play Baby Doll, her mother dies and she's left with her abusive stepfather and he puts her in an insane asylum and she has to escape and she meets her friends across the way.” Vanessa – “I play Blondie...she fits into the world with these amazing girls and actually gets to shoot some of the biggest guns, which was one of my favorite parts.” Jena - “I play Rocket and it's so amazing to see it. I wish we could be out there. She plays Sweet Pea's younger sister, Baby Doll comes into this world and I have to introduce her and end up really liking her...I help rally the troops.” Jamie - “I play Amber and she's kinda the first one to jump onto Baby Doll's plan...she's extremely loyal. I think that reflects in the fantasy scenes.” Carla - “I play a Polish psychiatrist in the asylum...it was an extraordinary experience in only a way that Zack can do.”

Where did the story come from? Zack - “It originated for me in this transition, I've been making commercials for 15 years before I started making movies...playing with time, and kicking ideas around with time...really in a stressful moment, being able to pack this insane experience in a single moment, and it grew. I was fascinated by trying to create an ending, because the movie does have a twist or a reveal and I wanted to have a satisfying ending...I wanted something where after I saw the first cut, I thought 'I could take all of the action out and this would still be awesome' because all the girls did such a good job.”

Each girl dances differently – Zack - “There's a sequence that depicts a day in the life of the reality that has been created, and in that reality there's a dancing singing aspect to it. The girls had to do a montage of what they would have been doing.” Emily - “I didn't get to do a dance...every time my character dances is when we get transported into the other world. We would group together and watch the other girls when they had their solo dances.” Jena - “What's cool is that Carla's character is a therapist in the reality of the world and uses sound therapy and that's used in the interpretation of the other world with sound therapy...the cool part about the movie is visualizing our internal selves...I think it'll be exciting for you guys to see the dances.” Carla - “We did them in this massive hall that was built, like an old homage to Moulin Rouge...this huge space with other people in it...it gave it this spectacular energy.”

How much better is it to work with an all-female cast? Zack - “It was awesome. I could say something about male and female sexuality and sexual preferences and a lot of stuff, but maybe what I'll just say is that these actors were amazing and never flinched and never blinked when I asked them to do crazy shit....and that is all I can ask.”

Jamie, how did you prepare? Jamie – “I had a crash course in how to fly a plane and a chopper, so that was pretty cool. The girls worked out so hard, we trained together for three months. It required a lot of physical commitment and it naturally came together that we all loved spending time together.”

What's it like to have a place among the sexy ass-kicking women of cinema? Jena - “It's totally awesome.” Emily - “This movie is so different in terms of a female action movie...a lot of times it can be a parody, like 'oh, these girls have guns, so it's funny.' But it's great.” Jena - “I think an absolute credit to Zack is that working in this genre a lot of times people tend to build one dimensional characters...not only do we get to wield amazing weapons, but we're also intricate human beings on screen as well.”

Zack - “We've done stuff in this movie we've never done before.”

Do you find yourself leaning one way or another between simple stories or more complex ones? Zack - “It's more exhausting [for the complex ones]...each thing is its own thing and the reality is that they're all complicated in their own way...when you're telling a simple straightforward story you've got to keep it compelling and interesting.”

Zack - “I don't want to ruin the movie, but I spent a lot of time working on this movie trying to figure out the rules and reality of the world once you're in the alternate reality...as long as those things all coalesce in the end, that's the real trick – getting them all to match up in the end.”

Zack - “I think the movie has a chance to be PG-13...there's a lot of fantasy creatures being mowed down. If you've heard of a little movie called Lord of the Rings, they killed orcs and stuff and got a PG-13.”

How was it making and writing such strong female characters? Carla - “It's what's so exciting and unique about this movie is that you do have incredibly empowered women in this movie...women are always looking for multiple layers because we're very complex creatures...you don't have to be just one thing...a lot of male action heroes it's cool to just be what you are, but with women, it's like 'they're dressed sexy, so maybe they're being objectified'...for everyone you'll see a real strength and triumph in themselves.”

Vanessa, what was it like? - “I do this because I do projects that I'm passionate about and I heard about this one and read it and said it sounds like the coolest movie ever but there's no way in hell Zack will give me the part. But I auditioned several times and luckily enough he did give me the part...everybody on the film is so amazing and I feel like I grew so much from this.”

Zack - “I do love adapting comic books. People always say 'maybe you're too faithful to the graphic novel', but they wouldn't say that for people who adapted a regular novel...I will say that when we started working on this and written the screenplay, it became like adapting the script. I treated it with as much respect as Watchmen, 300, or Dawn of the Dead for that matter.”
